McGregor dedicates win to late mum
FORMER rising amateur star Lee McGregor dedicated his first pro victory to late mum Elizabeth — and vowed to keep working towards a world title in tribute to her. His mother passed away aged just 44 earlier this year, losing her battle with cancer. McGregor, who stopped Stefan Sashov with a body shot in the opening round on Saturday night, said: ‘That win was for my mum, 100 per cent. ‘I want to dedicate that win to her. I know she will be proud looking down on me and she will be guiding me on. ‘I am not stopping until I win a world title for her.’ Aged just 20, bantamweight McGregor — cheered on by childhood pal, Scotland striker Jason Cummings — is aiming high under the guidance of former great Barry McGuigan, saying: ‘I want to be in tough competitive fights as soon as I can. I am going to keep blasting guys out there and then they will have no option but to put me in a tough fight.’ Fellow Edinburgh fighter Jason Easton took his pro record to 11-0 in the superlightweight division, winning an entertaining scrap against Czech champ Joel Zahradnik by a wide margin on points. Easton said: ‘I am quite happy to scrap for 12 rounds. The people like that, so that is what I’ll give them. ‘But I hope there are bigger opportunities and bigger titles down the line.’
