Graduates’ pay plea for moving north
ENGLISH graduates are demanding larger salaries to work in Scotland – because they know they will have to pay more tax.
Engineering industry bosses say talented graduates from universities south of the Border want to be ‘indemnified’ for accepting posts in Scotland.
They say the requests have been rejected – but warn it shows the tax policies of the SNP are already putting off skilled workers from moving north. Bryan Buchan, chief executive of Scottish Engineering, said: ‘We have already heard stories of graduates from English universities asking to be indemnified against tax differentiations in Scotland.’
He added: ‘It is indicative that the tax policies can have an impact on being able to employ the appropriate people.’
A Scottish Government spokesman said: ‘Taxpayers here already get the best deal in the UK, with a range of services and benefits which are not available elsewhere.’
