A smart new road bridge... but same old jams

-

ON a recent road trip I drove on the new Queensferry Crossing. It is a smart bridge – but with two lanes and a hard shoulder, inadequate for current traffic flow, never mind the future. And with the same old infrastructure either side, drivers face the same old jams in the same old places. In the morning rush-hour, the old bridge should be open to all southbound traffic and to north-bound traffic in the evening. But given the First Minister cannot drive and the Transport Minister is no expert, drivers will sit and fume as the bridge is touted as a marvel of Scottish engineering.

JIM RALSTON, FALKIRK, Stirlingshire. LIKE thousands of other drivers, I was caught in horrendous jams on the M8 around Glasgow Airport yesterday. Barrier replacement work has been going on for weeks, causing jams even at night. I noticed that while I was battling to get to work, Transport Minister Humza Yousaf was tweeting about the UK Budget and an earthquake in Iran. SUSAN YOUNG, Greenock, Renfrewshire.
