WILKINS WOULD LOVE A SHOT

- By STEPHEN McGOWAN

RAY WILKINS last night offered Rangers his assistance with their managerial predicament. The Ibrox club have spent the last five weeks swithering over a successor to Pedro Caixinha. A Rangers midfielder for two seasons in the 1980s, the former England international insisted they need a man with an understanding of what it takes to beat Celtic. ‘They have to get an ex-Ranger,’ Wilkins told talkSPORT. ‘Somebody at the helm that knows what this club means, not only to them personally, but to the people of Glasgow as well. ‘This is an institution. This isn’t a football club. This is a huge global institution. ‘You have Alex McLeish, Ian Durrant, Barry Ferguson, Terry Butcher, Ally McCoist out there. These guys have seen it and done it and want to do it again — myself included.’ Wilkins admitted he would jump at the chance to offer his services. ‘I’m in the frame.’ he said. ‘I’d love to be able to help a wonderful football club get back on its feet. ‘I’m 61 years of age. I have experienced some of the finest times of my life at Ibrox with some of the finest people I’ve met in football. ‘These things have to come back to the people that are playing at the moment. ‘They are not getting the enjoyment and, trust me, the joy of being at a club like that is absolutely incredible. ‘We need some people in there that know what it’s like to play for Rangers.’ Caixinha, meanwhile, could make a return to management in Mexico with Cruz Azul. The failed Ibrox manager is now favourite to replace sacked Paco Jemez at the top-flight outfit.
