Snow and ice alert as autumn draws to a close

- By Paul Drury

DECEMBER is traditionally viewed by many as the start of winter.

But it seems the weather is not prepared to wait, with icy conditions arriving before then. Temperatures in Glasgow will drop to around -4C tonight, with rural spots expected to be a degree or so colder.

Chill air drawn down from the Arctic will lead to a warning of snow and ice for the northern half of Scotland. Overnight snow and ice are expected to affect transport networks until late this morning, leading to longer journey times on the roads and railways.

Up to 2in of snow is forecast on ground above 100m (328ft).

Icy patches are predicted for untreated roads and weathermen say pedestrians and cyclists will face an additional hazard as water washed off treated roads turns into ice.

Met Office spokesman Nicki Maxey said: ‘Thursday night will be particularly cold in Glasgow, down to around -4C, but we are looking at milder air coming in for the weekend.

‘As we go through Saturday and Sunday, competing areas of low and high pressure move slightly, allowing milder air to come through. However, these temperatures are increasing at a higher level, so things on the ground won’t feel too much warmer.’

Cloud will arrive in central parts tomorrow, bringing to an end the sunny, if chilly, days experienced this week.

Aberdeen’s temperature could reach double figures on Saturday, with 10C (50F) forecast.
