- By Dean Herbert

A TEENAGER died yesterday after an incident at a school on the Isle of Lewis.

The 15-year-old was at the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway when the alarm was raised yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the school at 2.30pm and the boy was taken to the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.

It was later confirmed that he had died after arriving there.

Western Isles Council described the boy’s death as ‘tragic’ and said it would offer support to any pupils and staff affected.

A spokesman said: ‘A tragic incident occurred at the Nicolson Institute today to which the emergency services were called.

‘A pupil was conveyed to Western Isles Hospital where he has since passed away. The school and the council will put appropriate support mechanisms in place for staff and pupils.’

Police Scotland said that there were no suspicious circumstances and a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.

The Nicolson Institute is the largest school in the Western Isles, with a student population of around 1,000.

It consists of five houses, including one which contains only pupils who can claim to be fluent in Gaelic.

Former pupils include the Nationalist MP Angus MacNeil.
