YOU HAVE YOUR SAY

-

EVERY week, Money Mail receives hundreds of your letters and emails about our stories. Here are some from our report about how a 78-year-old man was told to pay £1,145 for car cover after his vehicle was written off . . .

WHAT a rip-off. The law needs to be changed to stop this from happening. Insurers have drivers over a barrel and it seems no one is there to protect us. L. W., Bournemouth.

HAVING worked in insurance for 32 years, I can tell you there is an easy solution to this man’s case: he could have withdrawn his claim and cancelled the policy mid-term.

Claiming on a car worth so little is a waste. The insurer should have made him aware of this. D. D., Leicester.

THE insurer should have been up-front and told him claiming wouldn’t be worth it. That way, he could have probably cancelled the policy and wouldn’t have had to pay out £1,145 for the rest of the year. T. N., Preston, Lancs.

CAR insurance is the biggest rip-off of them all. Even if you’re in an accident and it isn’t your fault, your premiums go up. It’s about time the Government did something about this. A. D., Somerset.

THE real scandal here is the ludicrously low payouts you are offered when your car is written off. Insurers never seem to give you a fair price. O. R., Newport, Wales.

I CAN’T believe he was paying £109 a month for a 20-year-old car. How on earth do insurance firms arrive at these figures? One month’s premium is probably worth more than the car itself. F. A., Godalming, Surrey.

I DON’T see what the insurer has done wrong. This man paid in monthly instalments — how can he expect a payout if he hasn’t paid his annual premium in full? D. T., Exeter.
