Drunk buggy rider drove into traffic

A Drunk disabled woman was caught driving on one of the capital’s busiest roads on her mobility scooter.

Christine Bey was spotted heading into oncoming traffic on Western Approach Road earlier this year.

The 43-year-old was eventually stopped and pulled over by police officers who found a bottle of whisky on her lap.

She became abusive and struggled with them as they tried to take the alcohol away. Bey, of Leith, spat in the face of an officer. police discovered she had hepatitis C and the officer involved had to have blood tests over a six-month period.

Bey admitted driving under the influence of alcohol and spitting on the officer when she appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday.

Fiscal deputy Rachel Aedy told the court Bey was seen riding her scooter ‘erraticall­y’ around 9.50pm on January 9. She added: ‘There were concerns for her safety. Two officers attended. The accused smelled strongly of alcohol.’

Bey refused medical treatment and had to be placed in a holding cell at St Leonards police Station wearing a spit hood. The officer who was spat on has now been given the all-clear.

Neil Martin, defending, said his client suffered from ‘acute health problems’.

Sheriff Thomas Welsh handed Bey an interim driving ban and deferred full sentence to January 31 next year.
