Wright out as Lewis shines
SECOND seed Peter Wright was bundled out of the PDC World Championship at the Alexandra Palace last night — blown away by an incredible performance from Jamie Lewis. The Welshman fired in 13 180s and averaged more than 107 with three darts as he put ‘Snakebite’ to the sword 4-1. Wright won the opening set against the darts but Lewis took the second with three 12-dart legs, an average of almost 120 and two bullseye finishes. It was undoubtedly the best performance of the 26-yearold’s professional career and Wright was magnanimous in defeat as he refused to blame a recent illness for his downfall. The 47-year-old Scot has lost two stones in weight after doctors diagnosed three gallstones and it was touch and go whether he would be able to take part in this year’s tournament. Lewis took full advantage of his opponent’s discomfort, coming up with some big finishes at key times and landing 54 per cent of his doubles as he powered his way to victory. Lewis will now play England’s James Richardson — a 4-1 winner over Alan Norris — in the third round. Antonio Alcinas and Darren Webster will face each other in the last 16 after both enjoyed 4-1 victories yesterday, over Kevin Munch and Simon Whitlock respectively. The third round began last night with an all Dutch clash between Raymond van Barneveld and Vincent van der Voort and it was two-time champion Barney who prevailed 4-1. Van der Voort began well and looked like troubling his compatriot but van Barneveld gradually asserted control and pulled away for a comfortable victory.
