Fashion verdict: Time to try a splash of colour

-

NO one quite does ‘understated chic’ like Meghan Markle. It was only her second official engagement with Prince Harry, and once again the bride-to-be nailed the image of down-to-earth fiancee.

Meghan, who clearly has never been a fan of garish prints or colours (a far cry from the rest of the Royal family), chose to stick to a muted colour palette.

She opted for a long coat – £ 93.86 from Canadian brand Smythe, now sold out – in a greyish, oatmeal colour with a £29 scarf in a similar tone from luxury British designer Jigsaw. The pale hues instantly lifted Meghan’s complexion and accentuated her pearly white, Hollywood smile.

Perhaps in a bid to show she is in fact like the rest of us, Meghan chose to mix her high-end with high street by teaming a black bell-sleeve £4 Marks & Spencer jumper with a pair of wide-leg £4 0 Burberry trousers and £480 tortoiseshell heels by Sarah Flint – resulting in a classic and timeless ensemble. Royal watchers speculate she might have bought the jumper in the M&S on Kensington High Street, just a short walk from the palace.

With no sign of a quaffed blow-dry, Meghan wore her hair in a messy bun, accessorizing only with simple stud earrings. In this case perhaps a pair of drop earrings would have jazzed things up a little.

Her choice of three plain gold rings on her thumb, index and ring fingers was a bid to stay young and unconventional, but in all, Meghan has once again played it very safe. In the future, it would be a treat to see a splash of colour here or there, but we aren’t holding our breath.
