BREAKING THE MALE GRIP ON RADIO 2

-

CAN it be credible that the rather wonderful Jo Whiley is to be the first female on BBC Radio 2’s weekday, daytime schedule for 20 years?

Credible or not, that is the way decisions have swung down Radio 2 way in the two decades since Debbie Thrower departed the airwaves.

The day begins with The Chris Evans Breakfast Show – which is why I tune into Smooth – and continues with Ken Bruce, with whom I have no quarrel.

Jeremy Vine does lunchtimes before handing over to Steve Wright in the Afternoon, who takes us through to Simon Mayo’s Drivetime, by the end of which only truckers are listening.

Now, in its magnanimity, the Beeb has decided to let Miss Whiley co-host Drivetime with Mr Mayo.

I’d have given her Steve Wright’s job. Somewhere along the line in the 350 years he has been in it he has forgotten the first rule of DJing – telling me who was singing the song.

For his £550,000 salary, I think Miss Whiley would remember it.
