PICK OF THE DAY
ROME UNPACKED, 9PM, BBC2
CULTURE vultures Andrew Graham-Dixon and Giorgio Locatelli (pictured right) continue to explore the lesserknown side of Rome. In the concluding episode, they seek out the papal, baroque and Renaissance history of this ancient metropolis. The pair’s first stop is the Basilica di San Clemente, which Andrew describes as being like a ‘vertical time machine’ due to its patchwork construction, with layers of historical building additions sitting on a subterranean chamber dating back to early Rome. Giorgio is so entranced that he lapses
into his native Italian.
