Fergie’s gushing online posts ... and then silence

- By Rebecca English Royal Correspondent

The official announcement of eugenie’s engagement was heralded by three bizarre postings on Twitter by her mother. The messages from Sarah, Duchess of York, featured photographs of the couple accompanied by captions in which she described Jack Brooksbank, as her ‘son, brother and best friend’ and a ‘solid rock’. A planned BBC TV interview with Fergie to talk about the engagement was subsequently cancelled suddenly, leaving her ex-husband Prince Andrew to field questions from reporters. The change of plan led to speculation that the duchess may have been silenced due to her effusive Twitter postings. One source told the Mail: ‘The feeling was that it [the official reaction] was all better, and more appropriate, coming from the duke and Buckingham

Andrew, who was in Norfolk after spending the weekend at Sandringham with eugenie, where they informed the Queen of her engagement, said: ‘I am absolutely overjoyed, I’m thrilled. Jack is an absolutely outstanding young man and eugenie and he have got to know each over a number of years, and I’m really thrilled for them.’

he added: ‘I can’t speak for the duchess but we… and for [eugenie’s sister] Beatrice ... we are overjoyed today that eugenie and Jack have got engaged.’ Asked about when the wedding might take place, he said: ‘It’s now about finding the time and the date and getting it all organised, I think probably in the autumn some time, is the time every is looking at.

‘But today, it’s their day and I’m just completely overjoyed for them and we wish them every happiness.’
