Toothless Russia

-

I DO not share the concerns of General Sir nick Carter about the weakness of the armed Forces in the event of a Russian-Uk conflict (Mail).

his statement is a reaction to possible defence cuts. The fact is Britain has debts of over £1.8trillion and growing, and we just can’t afford to spend, spend, spend.

We are part of the strongest armed entity in existence, nato. Vladimir Putin knows that any attack on the Uk would be met with overwhelming force from the other 28 member countries that would attack his country from the north, South, East and West.

Three of the nato states are nuclear powers: Britain, France and the U.S.

almost weekly, Russian fighter aircraft, warships and submarines pass close by our airspace and waters. however, we never learn of nato forces doing the same around Russian territory.

The fact is the Russian economy is going down the tube. a quarter of its companies cut salaries last year, and the average wage is £326 a month, less than in China, Poland or Romania. Mr Putin is too wise to risk an armed conflict with nato.

Ian P. Oliver, leatherhead, Surrey. General Sir nick Carter is right to be concerned about the defence of our island. The armed Forces were run down in anticipation of the forming of the EU army.

Due to bad planning, the new aircraft carrier does not have any aircraft. The Russians must think they’re facing the equivalent of Fred karno’s Circus! Phil GRANGER, West Malling, Kent.
