Maintenance staff set to stay on

HUNDREDS of staff face losing their jobs at a hotel where a fire claimed the lives of two guests.

Much of Cameron House, on the banks of Loch Lomond, was destroyed last month in the blaze in which journalist Simon Midgley, 32, and his 38-year-old TV producer partner, Richard Dyson, died.

Workers attended a meeting at Dumbarton Football Club yesterday at which they were told the hotel was shedding hundreds of jobs.

It is understood around 150 contracted staff are expected to be affected as the hotel enters a ‘consultation’ period. Around 155 workers on zero- hours contracts have already been informed they will not be offered more shifts at present.

A further 150 staff are expected to be retained to work at the nearby Carrick golf course, Boathouse bar and grill and the marina. Maintenance and ground staff are also expected to keep their jobs.

The hotel says it expects the consultation period to be completed by late next month. The fire broke out around am on December 19, leading to the evacuation of 200 guests. Firefighters battled for more than 24 hours in an effort to bring the blaze under control.

The hotel – popular with showbusiness and sport stars – housed the Michelin-starred Martin Wishart at Loch Lomond restaurant.

It is not yet known if the US-based owners intend to refurbish the hotel.
