Scottish Tory leader shows her romantic side in Vogue interview

RUTH DAVIDSON has revealed she knew she would marry her fiancée after only three dates – as she spoke candidly about her wedding.

In a rare insight into the Scottish Conservative leader’s personal life, she said that planning for the big day was well under way – but admitted she is keeping details of the date and location private.

Miss Davidson said that she had ‘surprised herself’ after falling in love with partner Jen Wilson so quickly – but has revealed her excitement for their wedding day.

The Edinburgh Central MSP, 39, also revealed her desire to have children, admitting that if she is to start a family, it would have to be ‘soon’.

And she opened up, saying that she was insecure about her weight.

She told Vogue magazine that after the initial ‘fright’ of looking at dresses in a wedding magazine, she and Miss Wilson have decided they will not have bridesmaids – but will have their sisters as ‘best women’.

Miss Davidson has become one of the most popular figures within the UK Conservative party after helping the Tories hold on to power by returning 13 MPs north of the Border. It earned her a new-found stance within the party, allowing her to flex her muscles over issues including Brexit.

Despite calls for her to take over as leader of the UK party, Miss Davidson said she has no plans to replace Mrs May, but added the talk around this is ‘a nice thing to have in your back pocket’.

Miss Davidson is planning to keep her wedding day private and has not revealed the date after previously postponing due to a large vet bill which wiped her wedding fund when her dog, Wilson, was hit by a car.

She and Miss Wilson were engaged in 2016, and Miss Davidson said they bought a wedding magazine, but added: ‘It frightened us so much we put it away and didn’t talk for three months about what we wanted to do. It was terrifying.

‘It was very traditional, men in morning suits and women in long white gowns, and that’s not really what we’re going for.’

Instead, she revealed that she is going for a less traditional gown with a ‘sort of cowl-neck, sort of sheath dress’.

Miss Davidson said: ‘We’re not 25; I’m 40 this year, and honestly I care more about the playlist than I do the dress.’

She also revealed that the wedding will be a break from work, claiming that with her fiancée’s large Irish Catholic family ‘there’s going to be enough people there without inviting workmates.’ Asked what made her fall in love, Miss Davidson said: ‘She just made everything easier and better. Also, she helped me sleep.’

She said that she knew she would marry Miss Wilson after only three dates.

Recalling the moment, she said that she had been at a BBC debate before the 2014 independence referendum and was waiting for a taxi home with others who had appeared on the show.

The others had been eager to go out after the debate, but Miss Davidson said: ‘I said, “I’ve really got to go. I’m seeing a girl tonight”. The others were in no hurry. I was like “No, you don’t understand. I’m going to marry this girl”. And it was our third date.’

Miss Davidson also spoke of her hopes of having children.

She said; ‘Luckily for me, I’m marrying a woman who’s younger than me because I’m now getting to the age where if I don’t have them soon, it’s not going to happen. I know that Jen would be an amazing mum.’

But Miss Davidson admitted her weight was her biggest insecurity. She said: ‘I could lie and tell you that I just eat cucumbers and hummus, but nobody will believe you. I love a crisp.’

Miss Davidson appears in the March edition of UK vogue.
