450 poultry plant jobs are under threat
HUNDREDS of jobs are at risk at a Scots poultry plant after its owners announced it could be shut down within months.
The 2 Sisters Food Group (2SFG) says its processing site at Cambuslang in Lanarkshire is among three ‘loss making’ facilities it is considering closing down.
The plant’s closure would see 450 people lose their jobs along with an additional 500 at two plants in the Midlands.
Union chiefs last night said they had begun talks with the company to find an ‘alternative to closure’, which could take place as early as this summer.
But the company insisted it will be creating around 1,000 new jobs at different locations across the UK as it ‘simplifies’ how it works.
Unite union convener Scot Walker said: ‘Unite will do everything to find a way to safeguard the future of the site and protect the jobs.
‘The company are saying that staff can be redeployed to other sites run by the company – like Coupar Angus. That is not a viable alternative which dictates the necessity of fighting to save the plant in Cambuslang.’
The company says it plans to create 250 new roles in Coupar Angus, Perthshire.
A 2SFG spokesman said: ‘We will offer colleagues the opportunity to take up roles at our other sites in Scotland.’
