THE RISE AND FALL OF OWEN COYLE

-

ST JOHNSTONE 2005-07

Despite Coyle’s side being pipped by St Mirren then Gretna for promotion, his two years in charge were largely successful. Led Saints to two semi-finals and recorded a first win at Ibrox in 35 years along the way.

BURNLEY 2007-10

Having narrowly missed out on Bolton Wanderers job, Coyle joined bitter rivals Burnley in November, 2007. Beat Chelsea and Arsenal on way to League Cup semi-finals but trumped that by leading them back to top flight after defeating Sheffield United in 2009 play-off final. Linked with Celtic job.

BOLTON WANDERERS 2010-12

Joined Wanderers in January, 2010, and vindicated that decision by keeping them up while Burnley were relegated. Finished 14th in first full season at club but they lost their top-flight status the following term. Dismal start to 2012-13 saw him fired that October.

WIGAN ATHLETIC 2013

Announced as manager of English Championship side following departure of Roberto Martinez to Everton. Failed to string together any meaningful form and left after six months with Wigan having just lost for the third time in a week and lying 14th in table.

HOUSTON DYNAMO 2014-16

Agreed to three-year contract to become head coach of MLS outfit in United States but only made it halfway through the deal. Finished eighth out of ten in the Western Conference in his only full season in charge. Departed by mutual consent in May, 2016.

BLACKBURN ROVERS 2016-17

Given a two-year deal in June, 2016, Coyle never won more than two games on the bounce. Left the following February after just 37 games in charge with club well on its way to third tier of English football.

ROSS COUNTY 2017-18

The big-name appointment Roy MacGregor craved after dispensing with Jim McIntyre. Started with victory at Kilmarnock but managed just three more in subsequent 21 games. Failure of big-money January acquisitions like David Ngog confirmed Coyle had lost the magic touch.
