Shop that’s too sexy for the High Street
THEY are bright, eye-catching images designed to catch the attention of passers-by.
But it seems the shop-front pictures at one tanning salon are a little too much for some after they prompted complaints they are ‘offensive and overtly sexual’.
Now council bosses in Perth are considering action to make the business remove the display – near a church and a historic graveyard – which shows a woman in provocative poses.
Local Lib Dem councillor Peter Barrett said he has received complaints about the illustrations, part of the shop front of Sun Shack in the city’s Princes Street.
Meanwhile, Perth and Kinross Council has ruled the display may breach regulations relating to the area’s designation as a conservation area.
Mr Barrett said: ‘Residents and commuters have complained about the size and content of the images. They are offensive and overtly sexual. In one pose, the woman is pictured pressing her breasts together. In others, she is presenting her bottom to the street.
‘St John the Baptist Church and Greyfriars Burial Ground are viewed to the south and the offensive nature of the Sun Shack ads detract from both and impair the amenity of the local area.’
Sun Shack owners obtained planning consent for a ‘change of use’ to the property but did not receive permission to carry out external alterations.
Although the council can take action on any unauthorised changes, it would be up to the Advertising Standards Authority to investigate the images.
A spokesman said: ‘The signage does not have advertisement consent. We will consider serving an enforcement notice if the matter remains unresolved.’
Sun Shack, which has salons across Scotland bearing similar images, did not respond to requests for comment.
