Queens hit out at ‘ridiculous’ SPFL call

- By BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

QUEEN OF THE SOUTH have branded the SPFL’s decision to rearrange their postponed Championship clash with Dundee United for Tuesday night as ‘ridiculous’. The Palmerston outfit made a ‘hazardous’ trip home to Dumfries last Tuesday after the match at Tannadice was postponed late in the day. And, with the adverse weather forecast to continue over the coming days, Queens are angered at the prospect of having to make another 300-mile round trip in potentially dangerous conditions this coming Tuesday. The Doonhamers insist there are several alternative dates that would not prove as difficult for all concerned. But after their complaints to the governing body and United fell on deaf ears, they were left dismayed. A Queens statement read: ‘We are very disappointed with this decision and have made representations to both the SPFL and Dundee United. We accept the circumstances last Tuesday night were unfortunate and out of everyone’s control. ‘However, having made a hazardous return trip, with the travel restrictions still in place around the country, most of the weekend’s football already postponed and continued forecasts of snow for the next seven days, we find the decision to insist on us making another lengthy trip on the immediate Tuesday ridiculous.’ The SPFL did not wish to comment last night. But it is understood that when clubs cannot agree on a rearranged fixture, the wishes of the home team takes priority unless there is a good reason for the match not to go ahead on their preferred date.
