HOW SCOTLAND RATED
HEAD COACH — GREGOR TOWNSEND
If he had any hair, he would be pulling it out. Got tactics spot on but couldn’t legislate for his players lacking the basic skills when it mattered. A frustrating afternoon.
15 STUART HOGG
A mixed bag. On Huw Jones’ shoulder yelling for a pass that didn’t come. Then failed to find unmarked Kinghorn for certain try.
14 BLAIR KINGHORN
Angles all wrong trying to stop Stockdale from scoring his second try but took his own score well. One of our best performers.
13 HUW JONES (left)
Two-try hero against England but failed to shine. Failure to find Hogg with a simple try-scoring pass summed up his afternoon.
12 PETER HORNE
Gifted Ireland a try and passed up a chance to set up a certain touchdown. A day to forget for the Glasgow centre.
11 SEAN MAITLAND
Set up Blair Kinghorn for his try and was always coming inside trying to look for the ball. A decent performance from the Saracens man.
10 FINN RUSSELL
World class against England. Anonymous against Ireland. Johnny Sexton gave him a masterclass in stand-off play. Russell has a long way to go to reach his level.
9 GREIG LAIDLAW
Kicked one penalty and had excellent game management but his opposite number Conor Murray was much more dynamic.
1 GORDON REID
Worked hard throughout but did not have the impact he had against England and didn’t show up much in open play.
2 STUART McINALLY
Not at his best, with some of his line-out throws missing his men. Still, 18 good tackles in the 60 minutes he was on is impressive.
3 SIMON BERGHAN
Gave away a couple of unnecessary penalties and tired in his fourth straight Six Nations game.
4 GRANT GILCHRIST
His red headguard made him stand out on the pitch as much as his display. Looking back to his best.
5 JONNY GRAY
Not up to his usual high standard. Tackled well but struggled in the line-out which doesn’t happen very often.
6 JOHN BARCLAY (left)
Topped Scotland’s tackle count with 25 but understandably frustrated at the chances that his team failed to take.
8 RYAN WILSON
Lasted just 18 minutes before having to go off with a head injury assessment from which he never returned.
7 HAMISH WATSON
The pick of the Scotland pack was superb at the breakdown and did his best to stop Conor Murray going over the try-line. Never stopped working.
