So, how do you climb a frozen waterfall? With nerves of Steall

- By Mikey Jones

IT is one of the wonders of winter – temperatures so cold that a giant waterfall freezes.

But while most of us would be content to simply see this phenomenal spectacle, adventure sports fans have to go one step further.

Two brave climbers were pictured tackling the frozen Steall Falls in Glen Nevis, near Fort William, on March . The pair, Helen Rennard and Kevin Woods, decided the conditions were cold enough to attempt the 90ft climb.

Professional climber Dave MacLeod, 9, who is a friend of the pair, decided to use his drone camera to capture the moment they made the attempt. Despite water still flowing through the ice, the climbers completed their mission.

Mr MacLeod said: ‘In our mild winters, Steall Falls rarely freezes completely enough for ice climbers to climb it.

‘But after the recent Beast from the East, temperatures were really low.

‘When my friends told me they were going to go up and see if it was frozen enough to climb, I thought I must join them to see if I could climb it.

‘We were a little unsure because there was still some water running behind the ice, but I used no rope, just climbing by myself, and confirmed the ice was good. Then Helen and Kevin climbed it and I shot with the drone.’
