Is Vince Cable wrong about the people who voted for Brexit?

-

WHY do the media in general pay any attention at all to Vince Cable and his claims that people who voted Brexit were nostalgic for a time when ‘passports were blue, faces were white and the map was coloured imperial pink’? His opinions are irrelevant and totally misguided. All the people I know voted to leave the EU for two reasons: first they have experienced its bullying, anti-democratic ways for 40 years, and sadly, the younger generation have never known anything else, never known the ability to change a law or reject a policy as the vast majority of our laws are made in Brussels. They are also sick of politicians who constantly put personal advancement before public good. If you are in your 70s like me, you can remember when politicians resigned from office if they were caught out in a lie — not so for the Tony Blair generation. Cable and the ‘left-wing liberal elite’ (though they

are anything but liberal) choose to ignore these uncomfortable facts. Instead, they need to find a simple answer, so they label the ‘Brexiteers’ as ‘uneducated’ and ‘ignorant’ etc. It is they who display the true ignorance. riChard a. BUlloCh, huddersfield, W. yorks. IT WAs the elderly who voted to leave the EU, how do they know? I thought the ballot box was secret. alan J. hardWiCk, Croydon, Surrey. PUTTING aside the fact that Cable’s insulting remarks to those who voted leave are possibly in themselves racist, it would be good to see the irrefutable evidence on which he supports his assertion that 75 per cent of under-25s voted Remain and 70 per cent of over-65s voted Leave in the EU Referendum. As these ‘statistics’ might be an extrapolation of ‘dodgy’ exit polls or any poll that didn’t submit to the rigorous discipline of unbiased questions and a representative sample of all people in all areas, we must not treat them as ‘facts’. Pollsters have been very wrong in recent elections. Mike edWardS, nantwich, Cheshire. CABLE claims ‘older leavers’ voted for fewer black faces when they cast their Leave votes. Cable, you are disgusting. I voted leave because the UK is chained to an undemocratic corpse. You and your party cannot possibly claim to be ‘democratic’ when you do not recognise the result of the referendum and you want this country to be ruled by an undemocratic organisation that is the EU. If you believe that the EU project is so marvellous, why are the countries in southern Europe suffering mass unemployment, particularly among their young? It is ironic that you support both the EU and the young of the UK when it is the policies of the EU that have caused such misery for the young in southern Europe.
