Fancy a nip... at £21k a dram?

- By George Mair

TWO bottles of whisky described as ‘the Holy Grail of Macallan’ could make up to £850,000 at auction.

The 60-year-old 1926 single malts are from only 24 bottles produced at the Speyside distillery in 1986.

They feature labels specially designed by leading artists Sir Peter Blake, left, and Valerio Adami.

Unseen in public since they were last auctioned more than 30 years ago, the bottles will lead Bonhams’ fine and rare wine and whisky sale in Hong Kong on May 18.

Each one is estimated to fetch up to £425,000 – the equivalent of more than £21,000 a dram.

Daniel Lam, Bonhams’ head of fine wine and whisky in Hong Kong, said: ‘These bottles are incredibly rare. The exceptional calibre of the whisky, especially combined with the wonderful artwork from two towering figures of 20th century Pop Art – Peter Blake and Valerio Adami – represent a unique marriage of excellence.

‘Only 24 of these bottles were produced. The sale is a once-in-ageneration opportunity for collectors to acquire the Holy Grail of Macallan.’

Each artist’s work features on a dozen bottles. They are elegantly presented in specially commissioned tantaluses.

Sir Peter, born in 1932, is best known for co-creating the album cover for the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club band in 1967.

Italian artist Adami is most famous for bold, flat forms outlined in black.
