FOWLER WARNS SAINTS AHEAD OF ‘TITLE PARTY’

- By GEORGE GRANT

THE town of Brechin is expecting an invasion of Paisley Buddies as St Mirren fans eagerly anticipate a potential Championship coronation at Glebe Park this afternoon. Should the visitors beat their already relegated hosts, and nearest challengers Livingston fail to beat the Buddies’ Renfrewshire rivals Morton at Almondvale, Jack Ross’ runaway leaders will be celebrating the club’s return to the top flight for the first time in three years. St Mirren have already sold out their initial 1,750 ticket allowance for the game, but such is the demand that Brechin have agreed to allocate space for a further 500 travelling fans for today’s potential title-decider. Expect the party to last long into the night should Saints be officially crowned champions, but assistant manager James Fowler struck a note of caution yesterday before the planned festivities. While acknowledging his team are on the cusp of something special, Fowler warned the party atmosphere could quickly fall flat if Saints take their eye off the ball and allow Brechin to get their first league win of the season. ‘As a result of Livingston losing to Dunfermline on Tuesday, we’re in a good position,’ he said. ‘You can’t tell players not to think about what could happen and what could be achieved because they will. ‘Even if we win, there may not be anything to get over-excited about as Livingston could get the result they want against Morton. ‘However, we are also aware that we could end up with egg on our face. ‘We’re facing a team that know they’re going down and have not won a game. ‘It would be a great footballing story if they beat us and stopped us winning the league at their place. That will be the picture their manager Darren Dods will be painting, so we have to be wary.’
