KERR RELIEVED AS SCOTLAND RIDE THEIR LUCK

- ALAN CAMPBELL

SHELLEY KERR admitted Scotland had been fortunate to get the win they needed against Poland to keep their World Cup qualifying hopes alive. All three goals came in the last 15 minutes after Poland left-back Paulina Dudek had been sent off following a second yellow card. Glasgow City goalkeeper Lee Alexander had already saved a penalty and the Poles were the better side until Dudek’s dismissal. ‘It wasn’t a great performance but it was great result,’ Kerr admitted. ‘There’s a lot of things we need to address moving forward. ‘We showed a bit of nervousness at the start and we knew Poland would be physical and we didn’t match that. ‘Their penalty wasn’t a penalty but Lee made a good save and that gave us a bit of impetus to go and then take the game to them. The game then opened up and there was a lot more space. ‘The last 20 minutes, you saw what we’re capable of but perhaps we were a bit fortunate tonight, if I’m being honest.’ The best chances in the game all fell to Poland until the Dudek’s dismissal gave Scotland the impetus they had been lacking for the previous 75 minutes. Four minutes later Scotland got their first goal, again in controversial circumstances. Poland substitute Agnieszka Jedrzejewicz was lying just inside her own half holding her head when Scotland broke forward and Claire Emslie’s low cross was converted by substitute Zoe Ness for her first Scotland goal. A miserable night for the visitors was completed when Emslie got the second with four minutes remaining and then Cuthbert grabbed the third.
