We must be cautious over Syria, not wage war for Trump’s ego

-

WHY is Donald Trump tweeting about sending smart missiles to flatten Syria’s airfields? This can only bring us to the brink of nuclear war with Russia. Getting involved in another quagmire of conflict should be nothing to do with us. As Simon Jenkins sensibly argued, it would probably be best for that region and the rest of the world to be unified under the Assad regime, as repellent as that would be (Mail). Don’t send the world up in flames in a vanity project for a US President unfit for high office. Martyn Curtis, Caversham, Berks. WHEN Theresa May has finished sorting out the problems in Syria, perhaps she will be good enough to devote the same care to Britain’s problems with Europe, which seem to get pushed farther back with each new crisis that allows her to strut on the world stage.

GeorGe DoBBie, Blairgowrie, Perthshire. WHY blindly follow the flawed foreign policy of the US? Have we learned nothing from Libya and Iraq, which were ruined by taking out leaders who knew how to contain factions in the countries? Since we ‘liberated’ Iraq, more than 380,000 people have died. Lives of our young people were lost and many maimed, and for nothing. There must be no military action without the will of our people. roGer C. Bennett, Highbridge, somerset. IF OUR troops are sent to Syria, then lawyers should go, too. When they come under fire and are in danger, they can ask a lawyer if they can fight without the danger of being taken to court when they get home.

MiCHaeL aDaMs, rugby, Warks. COUNTRIES who oppose the use of chemical weapons in Syria should tell Russia they are not prepared to compete in the World Cup. Anything less means we care more about football than lives. JaMes WiGnaLL, accrington, Lancs.
