Oxlade-Chamberlain dreaming of glory

- By DOMINIC KING

LIVERPOOL midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain says the club ‘fear no one’ as they prepare for a Champions League draw that is loaded with references to their past. The Anfield club will discover their semi-final opponents today and whoever they are paired with will evoke memories from 1981 and 1984 — the years they won their third and fourth European Cups. Manager Jurgen Klopp believes the time has come to write a new chapter in the club’s history and, after knocking out Manchester City in the quarter-finals, Oxlade-Chamberlain believes they have momentum. He said: ‘To beat City twice in a week is no easy feat,’ said Oxlade-Chamberlain (left). ‘We did it twice in a week and we also did it at an earlier stage this season. ‘It just shows to us that when we are at the races, and at the right level, we can beat anyone in this league. ‘This is everything you dream of when you are a young lad. ‘You want to play in finals and they don’t come much bigger than the Champions League final. We’ve brought my dream that one step closer by getting into the semi-finals. ‘Whoever we get in the next round, it is on us to go and prove that we can beat people in Europe as well. ‘I don’t really mind (who we draw), it’s going to be tough whoever we play. People might say (the preferred draw) is Roma but look what they did to Barcelona. ‘They performed amazingly well and look a great side. It doesn’t matter who we get now, we have to make sure we are ready for anyone and we can beat anyone. ‘We have given ourselves a great opportunity going into a semi-final. We’ll try to compete again and try to go through.’ Bayern Munich were beaten by Liverpool on away goals in the 1981 semi-final — the clubs have not met in the 37 years since — before an Alan Kennedy goal saw them topple Real Madrid in Paris. Roma would be a repeat of the 1984 final which Liverpool won in a thrilling shoot-out, Kennedy scoring the decisive penalty in Rome.
