Duke’s brother charges £12 for royal wedding ‘street party’

-

There hasn’t been much talk of street parties to celebrate Prince harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials, so it is good to know that the 18th Duke of Norfolk’s younger brother is stepping into the breach.

Lord Gerald Fitzalan howard is to host a royal garden party on May 19 at his stately home, Carlton Towers, in Yorkshire, which will feature what it bills as ‘a Great British-style street party in honour of the couple’.

however locals are rather aghast to learn that they will have to cough up to gain admission.

Tickets will cost £10 in advance or £12 on the door.

‘That’s not exactly in the spirit of a street party,’ says one.

Celebrations at the street party will include live music, a hog roast, face painting, a bouncy castle, garden games and a bar.

A spokesman for Carlton Towers declines to comment.

Although the Duke of Norfolk is the premier duke of england, and responsible for organising the Coronation and the State Opening of Parliament, Lord Gerald and his wife Lady emma have struggled to keep an artistocratic roof over their heads. But they have been inventive in their efforts to keep their Victorian Grade I-listed stately home in one piece. They let it out for corporate events and weddings and James Bond-themed evenings and, more recently, Queen Victoria experience Weekends.

Carlton Towers doubled as Windsor Castle in the acclaimed ITV drama Victoria, starring Jenna Coleman.

Nine years ago, the couple had to sell off £2million-worth of family silver and heirlooms to stay afloat. ‘It will secure the house for the next 100 years,’ Lord Gerald promised.

Locals in Windsor are already benefiting from the Meghan Markle effect, with one house in the town centre charging visitors up to £3,500 a night during the nuptials.
