Perma-tanned Rod reveals: I’ve had my sun spots burnt off
ThrOUGhOUT his career he has sported a glowing tan. But it seems that years of sunshine breaks have caught up with Sir rod Stewart.
The singer, 73, has disclosed that he recently underwent a procedure to have sun spots removed from his hands.
Explaining why he was wearing a plaster during a talk, Sir rod – who has already battled throat cancer – said he had his ‘little sun spots burnt off’. ‘Sorry, I’ve just had an operation on my hand, that’s why I’m pulling a plaster off,’ he said. ‘They burnt the little sun spots off.’
Photos of the star in London last week show two painful-looking red burns on his left hand where the sun spots – small pigmented areas which often appear in the over-forties – had been targeted.
he is thought to have had cryotherapy treatment – where liquid nitrogen is sprayed on to a blemish – or laser treatment, where a strong beam removes the pigment from the skin.
Cosmetic surgeon Tariq Ahmad, of Cambridge Clear Beauty, said of cryotherapy: ‘This is one of the simplest options. We use a very cold spray which freezes only the blemished tissue.
‘It is frozen and thawed three times, usually in one session, for ten seconds at a time. The frozen tissue won’t survive and will form a scab until it falls off.’
In 2000, Sir rod had a cancerous growth removed from his thyroid gland, leaving him without a singing voice for nine months.
During the talk at the screening of his documentary, rod the Mod, at the British Film institute in London on Saturday, Sir rod also revealed how women used to ‘throw themselves’ at him during his heyday – but said he would ‘never touch a girl unless she wanted me to’.
he added: ‘You could get away with a bit more in those days than you can now, and things have changed for the good.’
