Passengers’ terror as bus veers off road
ONE person was critically ill in hospital last night and two others were in a serious condition after a bus left the road and smashed into an 8ft wall.
Firefighters used specialist equipment to cut passengers free after the smash in Glasgow’s West End.
Dozens of fire, ambulance and police units were called to the scene in the Thornwood area just after 7pm. A police helicopter was also scrambled.
Passengers described as ‘the walking wounded’ were treated at the roadside by paramedics. Last night, Police Scotland said: ‘Around 7.0 pm , officers were called to a report of a crash involving a singledecker bus which had overturned on the A739 slip road from the Clyde Tunnel heading to the West End of the city.
‘Eight people were taken by ambulance to local hospitals.’
The force said one was critically ill and two were in a serious condition. The driver was among those taken to hospital. Police Scotland added: ‘A further ten people are being treated at the scene and if required they will be taken by patient transport to hospital.
‘Officers from the divisional road policing unit remain at the scene and the road is closed. A full investigation will be carried out into the cause of the crash.’
A witness said: ‘I’m shaking. It was a terrible thing to see. Police and fire brigades and ambulances arrived really fast and started taking people off the bus. Some of them had to be stretchered out.’
