Not quite David Dimbleby... Scarlett Moffatt to star in the BBC’s royal wedding coverage
She doesn’t exactly have the credentials to report on news stories of national importance.
But that hasn’t stopped the BBC recruiting TV personality Scarlett Moffatt for a big role in its coverage of Prince harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle later this month.
The former star of Channel 4’s Gogglebox, who won I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of here in 2016, will report on the royal wedding for Radio 1.
The 28-year-old will feature on the station’s daytime shows every hour live from Windsor Castle, the BBC said.
Miss Moffatt, recently seen on ITV’s Saturday Night Takeaway, joins the likes of Chris evans, Alan Carr, Mel Sykes and Zoe Ball as part of the BBC’s radio coverage of the big day on May 19.
huw edwards, Kirsty Young and Dermot O’Leary will spearhead the BBC’s television coverage of the wedding.
The BBC faced criticism for choosing a ‘lightweight’ line-up to cover the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011.
It chose edwards to present William’s wedding rather than seasoned royal broadcaster David Dimbleby. This broke the Dimbleby family’s 60-year association with the BBC and the Royal Family which began with David’s father Richard. The Corporation also received 2,400 complaints over its coverage of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012. In particular, viewers were upset about a segment in which Fearne Cotton and singer Paloma Faith showed a sickbag adorned with the Queen’s face while discussing Jubilee memorabilia.
Charlotte Moore, director of BBC content, said it was ‘a real honour’ for the BBC to be the host broadcaster for Prince harry and Miss Markle’s wedding and praised its ‘exceptional’ line-up of presenters on the day.
