Heatwave on way for Bank Holiday

- By Paul Drury

THERE may not be many blue skies in Scotland over the Bank Holiday weekend but we can still expect a heatwave, forecasters say.

Clouds are likely to linger but temperatures could hit 23C (73F) when the sun manages to break through, according to the Met Office.

Millions are set to flood roads and railways to enjoy the May break – and those heading to England can sizzle in 28C (82F) heat.

But while rain is on the cards for many north of the Border, forecasters say a new heat record could be set on Monday.

Met Office spokesman Sophie Yeomans said: ‘The western side of hills will be at risk of rain and the country generally will linger under cloudy skies. But things really begin to warm up on Monday. It all depends on where and when the sun comes out but if it does, you could be looking at a new high.’

During dull spells, temperatures of 19-20C (66-68F) can be expected but sunny spells could push the mercury up to 23C (73F).

Miss Yeomans said: ‘There appears to be an outside chance Scotland will set a new record on Monday.’

Bookmakers have cut odds on Monday being the hottest ever UK May day, topping the 32.8C (91F) set in 1944. The highest temperature for an early May Bank Holiday Monday in Scotland is 23.2C (73F), in 1999.

Harry Aitkenhead of Coral said: ‘We had the hottest April day for 69 years last month and with forecasters suggesting sizzling Bank Holiday weather is on the cards, there’s a chance we might break a record in May.

‘We make it odds on, at 4-5, for this year to go on to become the hottest on record.

‘Perhaps it’s people betting with their hearts over their heads but with the sun set to return it does look a distinct possibility.’
