Calling all young hotshots!

- By Emma Cowing

WHEN Gordon Jack, one of Scotland’s greatest photographers, died suddenly in 2015, the country lost an incredible talent.

Now, for the second year running, the Scottish Daily Mail, supported by Canon, is delighted to be launching once again the Gordon Jack Young Photographer of the Year contest.

We want aspiring young photographers to send us examples of their work.

The subject this year is the great outdoors. Flora, fauna, your own back garden or the countryside, what you choose to photograph is up to you.

So whether it is a landscape, portrait, action shot or wildlife picture, pick a maximum of three images that you feel best capture your skills behind the camera. Then send them via email to gordon jackaward @ dailymail.co.uk.

Feel free to include a few words about your pictures.

You might want to tell us why you like them so much, or how you came to press the shutter just when you did. Do remember to include your name, address and a contact telephone number. The prize is an amazing Canon EOS 1300D Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm IS II lens – ideal for someone who wants to take their photography to the next level. The contest is open to all photographers aged 21 or under by the closing date. The winner will be chosen by Gordon’s friend and former picture editor, Stuart Nicol, in conjunction with Scottish Daily Mail picture editor Gary Stanway, Gordon’s widow Gill Jack and Gordon’s long-time friend and fellow photographer Michael Boyd.

This year, as well as a brand new Canon camera, we are offering an extra prize – a day’s red squirrel photography workshop in Tayport with Mr Boyd, who spent many years photographing wildlife and the great outdoors alongside Gordon.

He said: ‘Photographing red squirrels on this workshop is a great way to learn the skills to get the best results from your camera. Gordon would love the idea of promoting young photographers in their pursuit of their passion.’

To enter, send a maximum of three images to gordonjack award@dailymail.co.uk.

Entrants must be aged 21 or under by the closing date – midnight on Sunday, May 13, 2018.

Usual Scottish Daily Mail rules apply. There is no alternative cash prize and the Editor’s decision in all matters is final.
