Gerrard warns Celtic their run will end soon

- By MARK WALKER

NEW Rangers boss Steven Gerrard looked on from afar as Celtic lifted the Premiership trophy then warned them they will not have it their own way for much longer. Gerrard watched Rangers’ incredible 5-5

draw at Hibs with new assistant manager Gary McAllister in Dubai, where he was attending his final official Liverpool club function before he officially takes charge at Ibrox on June 1. Gerrard and McAllister were also keeping an eye on Celtic’s surprise 1-0 defeat to Aberdeen, which condemned their new side to third place in the league. And, as Celtic celebrated lifting their seventh Premiership title in a row, Gerrard issued a warning to Brendan Rodgers that life is about to get tougher for them. Gerrard said: ‘Celtic have had it their own way for far too long. ‘This is a massive opportunity for myself and Gary McAllister to go to a huge football club and try to improve things. ‘We go up to Glasgow and we will give it our best. ‘Liverpool have been fantastic because they actually came to me and said that Rangers would like the opportunity to speak to me. ‘I asked them what they thought and they have since given me every bit of support that I needed to go and take the challenge on. I go with Liverpool’s blessings.’ Gerrard has spent the last few days in the Gulf at an LFC World event and will travel to Kiev for the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid as part of his TV duties before taking charge at Rangers. And he pointed out — in a beach hotel question-and-answer session — that Rangers’ support is set to significantly increase. He said: ‘Every fan I have bumped into since the news broke is now officially a Rangers fan, too, so that’s been a huge boost for me. ‘I have had so many good-luck wishes and messages and it has been really great for me.’ And Gerrard stressed that he wants to play attacking football when he moves to Scottish football next season. He has promised Rangers fans he wants to play the game in the same swashbuckling style as his mentor Jurgen Klopp, who he has learned from as Liverpool Under-18s manager. ‘When you look at the style of football that Jurgen Klopp plays, I think every fan in the world loves watching that,’ said Gerrard. ‘He’s been absolutely massive for the club. He speaks honestly and truthfully. When you see a manager speak, you don’t want someone to pretend or bat back any question. He answers every single question with honesty and truth and that’s what we are about. ‘It’s one of his values that I hope to take.’
