On course for a job in the legal world

- SARAH HARRIS

HARD-WORKING Soroush Fini gained his graduate diploma in law last year and is now studying for legal practice.

the 32-year-old student at the University of Law on its London Moorgate campus, has been offered a training contract by leading law firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP.

Soroush, who lives in London, said he chose to enrol at the institution because its employability service is ‘brilliant’.

He says: ‘their advice, patience and support during the training contract application process was invaluable.

‘My tutors were also invaluable and their one-on-one support is something i am very grateful for.

‘i enjoyed relaxing with my course-mates after a day of lectures which is great for me as running my own business can be quite isolating.’

Soroush opted for the graduate Diploma in Law (gDL) because he wanted to continue working at the same time as studying.

‘i’d grown to rely on a regular salary,’ he said.

‘Balancing work and study is no walk in the park, but being able to attend university for three days a week made it achievable.

‘My career goal is to become a commercial solicitor and hopefully one day a partner at an international firm.’

Soroush says he would recommend the gDL to other students. ‘it’s never too late to explore new avenues and follow your dreams,’ he said.

‘Working while studying the gDL definitely takes hard graft but it also has benefits.

‘the experience i gained at work helped me excel in the classroom and i also learned a great deal on the course that helped with running my business.’

the University of Law is the Uk’s longest-established specialist provider of legal education and training in the Uk, with campuses in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Chester, guildford, Manchester and Leeds, as well as at exeter and reading universities. it was granted university status in 2012.

Jane Chappell, national programme director gDL & MA Law at the University of Law, said: ‘our focus is on helping our students to think like a lawyer and develop practical legal skills through problem-based learning.

‘it helps that our tutors are qualified lawyers with real-life experiences. the gDL has a very wide syllabus covering all core areas of english Law, but our students are supported through a structured pattern of study with assessments spread across semesters.’
