Setting up in business with a franchise makes you part of a network of like-minded people who can work together for good causes.

Alan and Amanda Hartley are franchisees for Barking Mad Dog Care and arrange dog holidays with host families while owners are away. they have been raising money for Dogs For good.

‘it’s a charity that funds the training of dogs to help children and adults with challenges including autism, physical disabilities, special educational needs and dementia,’ says Amanda, 52.

She and Alan, 55, (seen here with dog Shona) have been selling toy pups made of facecloths in Leeds. ‘We’ve raised £300 selling them at Scouts and Beavers and at my flower arranging club,’ says Amanda. ‘it’s good to do something for your community and it helps raise awareness of our business.’

Barking Mad franchisees have raised £6,000 for Dogs For good to support Labrador Prince through his first year with a volunteer puppy socialiser, plus a crate, bed, food, bowls, toys, collar and lead.

Lee Dancy, managing director of Barking Mad, which will continue to raise money for Dogs For good, says: ‘We are looking for more franchisees who combine a love of dogs with the ambition to grow a successful business and the desire to benefit their community.’ the franchise costs from £13,900. Last year, Hilary Coates and Alexis Bennett, franchisees with dog boarding franchise Wagging tails, raised £5,300 for Hearing Dogs For Deaf People at a charity rescue day.

Hilary says: ‘the event was run with newfound Friends, which uses trained newfoundlands to raise money for other charities. More than 30 volunteer “casualties” including me were rescued from a lake as the newfoundlands leapt from a boat and towed them to safety.’

By the end of 2017 Wagging tails had helped to raise over £17,000 for the charity and now have their own Hearing Dog puppy, neve, in training. the franchise starts at £12,995.
