McGregor is eyeing glory

Arfield earlier this week. McGregor, 36, was offered terms to stay at Hull City, but insists he couldn’t turn down the opportunity to resume his Rangers career, having left for Besiktas in 2012. He now hopes to help Gerrard end the club’s seven-year wait for a major trophy and create memories to accompany his earlier triumphs. ‘I can’t keep the smile off my face,’ said McGregor. ‘When the chance came, it was a no-brainer and I am buzzing to be back. Does it feel as if I’m coming home? It does. I started training here when I was probably 12. Just to be back is incredible. ‘As time goes by, you think it might not happen. But once there is a wee sniff it could happen, then obviously it’s exciting. ‘It came as a surprise. Someone gave me a shout two or three weeks ago to say Bomber (John Brown) wanted my number. I spoke to him a few times. We kept talking and here we are. ‘I just want to help the club in any way I can. I want to do my best, help other boys and try to get us back to where we belong. ‘There are so many great memories and you couldn’t write the script for some of them now. I want to, hopefully, achieve that again. ‘Once I knew Rangers were interested, it was the only place.’ Rangers are making further bids, with reports claiming Brighton have rejected an initial offer for centre-back Connor Goldson. Gerrard formally takes charge on June 1 and McGregor is looking forward to a new era at Ibrox. ‘I think it is a big coup for the club,’ he told Rangers TV. ‘Hopefully, he will bring that winning mentality back. You need to make this place a fortress. You need to win games, no matter who you’re playing. If you keep doing that then we’ve seen before that is what wins you titles.’ Gerrard said of McGregor: ‘He is a vastly experienced goalkeeper who we feel can add to the options available to us currently. He has won lots of silverware for this club and has shone at the highest level in Europe.’
