menage a trois recently came to an end.

‘My best friend who was living with us left, she went back to Florence, but she might be coming back in a month — I’m really hoping so, because it’s very lonely without her,’ the 55-year-old mother-of-two tells me. ‘My life is bereft. I want her back.

‘I’ve been trying to encourage other female friends to come and live with me in her absence.

‘But most of them are married with children and they keep going: “It’s not convenient.” ’

And what is the secret to her 15-year marriage? ‘Compromise, compromise, compromise!’
