I read with sympathy the story of rod evans’s best catch that went unnoticed by his team-mates who assumed it had fallen into a bed of nettles (Peterborough). I played between gully and point in village green cricket for many years, and one of my heroes was Colin Cowdrey. I once saw him catch an edged ball and slip it into his pocket without anyone seeing him. The response from the team and crowd was adulation when he revealed it. Oh, how I wished I could do that! While playing at point one afternoon, our captain was bowling his usual off breaks when the batsman edged it to me. It came at me perfectly. I caught it one-handed and slipped it into my pocket. ‘Where did it go?’ was the shout. Grinning, I revealed the ball. adulation? Forget it. The captain gave me a rollicking, told me to stop messing about and warned me I would be playing at third man if I did it again. Ho hum!
