Chauffeur’s haunting last message to wife

- By Arthur Martin

A CHAUFFEUR left a message on his wife’s phone just before his death saying: ‘I hope I haven’t disappointed you.’

Mohamed Amied Neda’s body was found outside the 23-storey tower with multiple injuries, suggesting he jumped to escape the flames after staying behind to try to help neighbours.

His wife Flora and son Farhad managed to escape from their top-floor flat and were in hospital in comas when he left the voicemail.

Mr Neda’s family broke down in tears as the poignant message was played yesterday.

The 57-year-old had fled the Taliban in Afghanistan with his family for a new life in Britain in 1998 and moved into Grenfell with his wife and young son the next year.

In the Dari language, he said to his wife: ‘Goodbye, we are leaving this world now, goodbye. I hope I haven’t disappointed you. Goodbye to all.’

His family had clung to the hope he was still alive, searching hospitals and mosques. But they realised he had died when police asked for DNA from his son to help identify his body. His brother Mohamed Aref Neda told the inquiry: ‘My world came crashing down.

‘The way the fire happened, his death, and the sudden severity of it all left me with so many questions and a big void in my life. The only thing I know is that my brother was a hero. He gave up his life for others.’

Mr Neda’s widow added: ‘I miss him so much. He will always be the love of my life. It is just so sad my beloved husband will not be there with us for Farhad’s wedding.’
