Gangland hit fears as gunman shoots at car driver

- By Annie Butterworth

A GUNMAN who opened fire at a driver in an attempted murder is being hunted by police.

The gangland-style shooting happened around 6.30pm on Sunday in Scotstoun, Glasgow.

A 27-year-old man was sitting in a parked vehicle when he was shot at by the occupants of another car which pulled up alongside, narrowly missing him.

The victim, who was uninjured, drove off along Kingsway Court before crashing into another vehicle a short distance away, while the attackers fled.

A badly damaged blue Suzuki Celerio, understood to have been struck by the victim’s car as he tried to drive away, remained inside a police cordon around a block of flats.

Officers appealed for witnesses to come forward. Detective Inspector John Morrison said: ‘These abhorrent individuals discharged a firepositions arm in a busy residential area, showing complete and utter disregard for the safety of members of the public.

‘We believe the attack was specifically targeted at the victim and additional patrols will be in the area to provide reassurance to the local community.

‘This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and extensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

‘The surrounding area would have been busy at the time and it is absolutely vital that anyone who saw or heard anything comes forward to assist with our inquiries.’

The murder bid comes weeks after David Scott was sentenced to a minimum of 22 years after killing Euan Johnston, 26, who was shot twice in the head as he sat in his car in Glasgow in November 2016.

Last month Kenny Reilly, 29, became the latest victim of Glasgow’s gang war after being shot in the head by a masked gunman as he sat in a BMW at traffic lights.

According to the National Crime Agency, Scotland is facing a growing menace from organised crime, with more than 3,000 gangsters and nearly 170 syndicates.
