‘Missing piece’ to riddle of banker killing

- By George Mair

THE wife of a banker shot dead on his doorstep more than 13 years ago, has appealed for ‘that one piece of missing information’ that could solve one of Scotland’s biggest murder mysteries.

Alistair Wilson, a Bank of Scotland business banking manager, was shot three times at his home in Nairn on November 28, 2004.

The 30-year-old father of two had been handed a bright blue envelope with the name Paul on it shortly beforehand.

His wife Veronica, who answered the door that night after bathing their two sons, is the only other person who saw the gunman.

Speaking in a new six-part BBC Scotland podcast, The Doorstep Murder, which will become available today, she reveals her ongoing struggle. She says: ‘The feelings, when you get in to the moment, every little bit, every sense of the evening comes back.

‘You have to do things daily, but it’s never away. It’s just filed in places and when a new piece of information comes out or anniversaries, it’s just back to the forefront.

‘And at different stages in the boys’ lives, they’ve came to you and you’ve got to go over it. And each time you go over wondering if you’ve missed a piece; is there something else? We just need that missing piece of information to come forward and piece it together.’

Mrs Wilson answered the door to a man who asked for her husband by name. Mr Wilson was reading his sons bedtime stories at the time but went to the door where he was handed the envelope. He took it to his wife then returned to the door, where he was shot twice in the head and once in the body.

The killer was described as a 35-40 year-old white male around 5ft 6in to 5ft 10in tall. He was wearing a baseball cap, dark blue lightweight blouson jacket and dark blue jeans.

Police Scotland Detective Superintendent Gary Cunningham told BBC Scotland’s investigations reporter, Fiona Walker: ‘We are still absolutely fully committed.

‘It is really important that we review all the other work that has been done over all these years and we identify new opportunities whilst moving forward.’

The podcast examines evidence that does not appear to add up.
