A pitch-perfect home

- By Paul Drury

DESIGNING a home that resembles the Sydney Opera House means following in some pretty impressive architectural footsteps. The famous Australian building, by Jorn Utzon, has become one of the world’s most iconic structures since it was completed in 1973.

Eleven years ago, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So no pressure, then.

Fortunately, the owner of Comraich, near Glenfarg, pulled off a remarkable statement of design half a world away amid the rolling hills of Perthshire.

Selling agent Andrew Thomson revealed the inspiration for the shell-like roof system came from the surroundings. Here, nestled below the Ochil Hills, the landscape dips and pitches in natural formation.

Mr Thomson said: ‘When it came to designing the house, the roof of the Sydney Opera House came to mind when the owner was surveying the landscape.

‘This has produced a quite stunning property, a one-off in the Scottish marketplace.

‘Comraich is a truly unique property which contrasts brilliantly with its lush, leafy surroundings.

‘With the garden having benefited from as much consideration and style as the house, this is a property that will appeal to design connoisseurs seeking either a spectacular permanent home or an easily maintained second home in the glorious Perthshire countryside.’

Often, something that looks quite breathtaking on the outside can disappoint on the inside.

But Comraich’s living areas appear to have had as much consideration spent on them as the dramatic zinc-lined exterior.

The open plan kitchen/family room benefits from double-height windows which look out onto some of Scotland’s most beautiful countryside.

The kitchen features porcelain floor tiles, a range of sleek contemporary cabinets and a breakfast bar by Bulthaup.

The units are topped in Corian and the luxury appliances come from the German manufacturer Siemens.

The family seating area is warmed by a wood-burning stove and there is plenty of space for a dining table. The sitting room is west facing and has a door out to the patio, making it ideal for summer socialising.

The bright studio/study next door also enjoys an entrance from the garden.

The master bedroom, with a walk-in wardrobe and a luxurious en suite shower room by Porcelanosa, is situated on the ground floor.

Head up a stylish white oak, glass and steel staircase and on T HE sensational roof line comes into practical use outside. A terrace has been built below the overhang of the roof, allowing for barbecues even in poor weather.

Perhaps this is yet another nod to life down under. But this amazing place does make you wonder.
