BOSS IS THE BEST PLAYER AT IBROX, SAYS GORAM

- By JOHN GREECHAN

STEVEN GERRARD has been urged to rethink his retirement from playing — and bring some world-class ability to a flatlining Rangers midfield. Ibrox legend Andy Goram believes the former England and Liverpool captain would still be ‘ten times better’ than any current midfielder in the squad. And he argues that, even though he retired from active duty in 2016, the 38-year-old should seriously consider taking control on the park as well as in the technical area. Goram declared: ‘If I was Steven Gerrard, the first thing I would be doing is getting my boots out — because he is ten times better than anyone in that midfield right now. ‘I do think it’s a viable option. What age is he? 38? Put him in. ‘If you have watched how they played last season, nobody can tell me Steven Gerrard wouldn’t do a better job than the players we have right now. ‘He would dominate the midfield against most teams. Any team, to be honest.’ Goram has been impressed by Gerrard’s activity in the transfer market so far — and sees the promise of future signings as the only reason why he wouldn’t consider returning to playing. ‘He is maybe hoping, of course, that he can bring in even better,’ said the former Scotland goalkeeper. ‘He has obviously been promised things. He wouldn’t have come to the club if he hadn’t been told he could bring players in. ‘It might take a lot of money to get in the kind of player he wants. It might also cost money to get players out, right enough. ‘But he’s not going to come up here if there is no budget. ‘He’s not going to put his neck on the line that way. ‘He’s already started with Allan McGregor, Jamie Murphy, Scott Arfield — so there is some promise there.’ Goram sees the return of keeper McGregor, 36, as a great first step — even though he doesn’t expect him to single-handedly fix a leaky defence. ‘I look back to the Graeme Souness era when he arrived at Rangers,’ he said. ‘The first thing he did was sign a goalkeeper, two centre-halves, a central midfielder and a centre-forward. ‘Steven Gerrard is going down that road again. He’s signed Allan, he’s tied down a midfielder (Arfield), so he’ll go down the middle of the park — and then bring in the fancy players around the outside. ‘I think McGregor will be one of his best signings, regardless of who else he signs — especially when it comes to the demands of the club because it is not easy to play at Rangers. ‘Allan has the experience there and he knows what it is all about.’
