WHEN you are three years old, it is always good to know you are the centre of attention.

And Princess Charlotte certainly made sure she stole the show during a family day out at the polo.

She romped around, practising handstands and leaving other royals in fits of giggles. The toddler skipped and slid down a hill, a broad grin on her face as she held on to her pinkframed sunglasses.

Charlotte was at the Beaufort Polo Club near Tetbury, Gloucestershire, with the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George and her cousins Isla and Savannah Phillips to watch Prince William play in a charity event.

George ensured he was not left out of the fun, running and leaping about in the sunshine, at one stage displaying his skills with a toy polo stick and ball. He also waved a toy gun around as he played a game of cowboys with another young boy. But he managed to get a little overexcited at one stage, throwing a tearful wobble that his mother was quick to comfort him over.

Kate – who had left baby Prince Louis, born seven weeks ago, at home – looked elegant in a casual £39.99 Zara dress and £125 Russell & Bromley wedges. She wore a Cartier Ballon Bleu watch and carried a Victoria Beckham Quincy leather tote bag.

Only a fortnight ago, the duchess wore another similarly priced Zara dress – prompting it to sell out online within hours.

Yesterday’s match, part of the Gloucestershire Festival of Polo, was raising funds for two of William’s charities, the Royal Marsden, which the Duke supports as president, and Centrepoint, of which he is patron.

The first day of the event, a highlight of the equestrian calendar, was attended by stars including Carol Vorderman, Lisa Maxwell and Richard Hammond.

Some onlookers raised eyebrows at the sight of George playing with a toy gun. One Twitter user questioned why he was allowed to have one, writing: ‘I really don’t get toy guns. Someone should have said that this is not okay.’ On Mumsnet last night, many respondents said they discourage their children from playing with toy weapons such as guns and swords.
