FolloWINg the letters about the origin of the ‘Four Candles’ misunderstanding which the Two Ronnies used, in the early Thirties my father, a shoemaker in lerwick, would ask me to get him pipe tobacco from the local shop.
His instructions were ‘an ounce of bogey roll’. It was only later I understood why my request always caused such hilarity among the staff; in my innocence I had asked for ‘an ounce of b **** r all’. ollie PottinGer,
