Vandals strike after Commons walkout

- By Rachel Watson Deputy Scottish Political Editor

A SCOTTISH MP’s office was vandalised only hours after the SNP’s ‘orchestrated walkout’ of the House of Commons.

Conservative Stephen Kerr yesterday told how his constituency office in Stirling had been attacked, and he blamed the vandalism on the Nationalists’ bid to ‘ramp up rhetoric’.

He posted pictures online showing the words ‘traitor’ and ‘lies’ spray-painted on the walls of the building. It is the second time Mr Kerr’s office has been vandalised since his election in June last year.

The attack came after the SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford was ordered out of the Commons by Speaker John Bercow on Wednesday. The party’s 3 other MPs then left the chamber in protest.

Writing on Twitter, Mr Kerr said: ‘The day after the SNP’s orchestrated walkout designed to ramp up rhetoric, my office has yet again been attacked.

‘Let me make myself crystal clear: No attacks will stop my office helping constituents.’

Underneath his comment a number of social media users celebrated the vandalism, with one claiming it ‘needs to happen more’.

Last night, Mr Kerr said: ‘As expected, vandalism and a renewed stream of online abuse has occurred as a result of the SNP MPs’ ramped-up rhetoric this week.

‘Since our election, Scottish Conservative MPs have been continuously targeted by online trolls, and are subject to constant threats and abuse, including death threats. The SNP MPs’ behaviour in Westminster only aggravates this.

‘While the SNP continue to pull stunts on manufactured grievances, my colleagues and I will continue getting on with the job our constituents sent us here to do – standing up for Scotland’s interests.’

Earlier this year, vandals put a banner outside Mr Kerr’s office reading ‘Tory scum out’.

The SNP refused to comment on the incident yesterday.
