THE GRANITE SWEATY!

Aberdeen hotter than the Costas as temperatures soar just in time for the start of the school holidays

WITH its grey skies and cloudy outlook, Aberdeen is not a place usually known as the hot spot of Europe.

But it appears the Granite City will this week become one of the hotspots for sunshine.

Forecasters say Scotland is set to bask in warm air from the continent, with temperatures on the North-East coast hitting 84F (29C) by Wednesday.

This could make it the hottest day of the year so far north of the Border, and two degrees hotter than Spanish holiday resort Marbella, which is predicted to peak at 81F (27C).

It follows a scorching weekend which saw Scotland bask in 72F (22F) heat yesterday.

Temperatures are also set to continue to soar today, with forecasters predicting Aberdeen will hit 82F (28C), toppling Scotland’s 2018 top temperature of 81.5F (27.5C), set at Achnagart, Ross-shire, on May 29.

Met Office forecaster Rachel West said: ‘Things are about to heat up. Edinburgh and the Central Belt can expect between 23C-24C (73F-- 75F) on Monday but Aberdeen could reach as high as 28C (82F).

‘As we move into Tuesday and Wednesday, the high pressure across the south of the UK moves north, which is good news for Scotland. A high of 29C (84F) is not out of the question on Wednesday, more likely in eastern spots like Aberdeen.’

The prolonged dry spell is causing water chiefs to get hot under the collar over possible droughts.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: ‘Scottish Water has advised customers to use water wisely in parts of Moray and Stornoway, Lewis.’

Health officials warned the public to take extra care in the heat.

Dr Linda de Caestecker, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s director of public health, said: ‘People should try to avoid being in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day between noon and 3pm.’
