Tearful Law finally breaks his Euro duck in Aviemore

- By JIM BLACK

DAVID LAW broke down in tears yesterday after ending his five-year quest to win on the European Challenge Tour. The Aberdonian secured a two-shot victory over Denmark’s Joachim Hansen to claim his maiden victory in his 100th event with a closing 67 at the SSE Hydro Scottish Challenge at Aviemore’s Macdonald Spey Valley course. His victory understandably proved too much for the 27-year-old following the death of his baby son 12 months ago. Law was also very nearly lost for words to describe his emotions at getting the monkey off his back at long last. ‘It feels good, really good,’ he said. ‘In five years out here I’ve never even been close to winning, so to do it here is amazing. ‘Everyone was rooting for me and I felt it carried me through.’ Law, who banked just over £35,000, was watched by former Open champion Paul Lawrie who has mentored him through his foundation and continues to coach him. He said: ‘Paul sent me a text on Saturday asking if I minded him coming to watch and I replied: “Absolutely, that would be great”. ‘He can analyse everything, good or bad, and we’ll talk about all of the things I did. About six weeks ago I was playing rubbish and my head was all over the place, so I didn’t think I would be here.’ Lawrie added: ‘He was magnificent all day. He’s always been at the tour level where he could win out here, but he now has to kick on and get a really good card.’ Law is the event’s first home victor since George Murray in 2010.

ENGLAND’S Matt Wallace held off Dane Thorbjorn Olesen, German Martin Kaymer and Finn Mikko Korhonen to claim a oneshot win in the BMW International Open in Pulheim, Germany with a final round of 65 for a ten-under par total. Scotland’s Scott Jamieson finished joint 12th with Sergio Garcia, who hit 68, after a final round 70 to finish five under.

BUBBA WATSON shot a final round of 63 to win the Travelers Championship in Connecticut by three strokes. The American two-time Masters Champion carded eight birdies and only one bogey to finish clear of a group of four players including overnight leader Paul Casey.
